Make The Most of Your Local Library ……..

Make the most of your library as it remains a place for vital resources in the most extraordinary of ways. The Dundee Public Library is such a place and is a part of the Polk County Library Cooperative. Our library is one of seventeen municipal libraries within the county offering a wide array of services the patrons and residents within their respective communities. Our library , here in Dundee is located at 202 East Main Street and is part of the Municipal Complex which also houses the Town Hall. Operating hours of the Dundee Public Library are from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm , Monday through Friday and from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday’s. National holidays are observed , so the library will be closed on those days unless otherwise specified.

On hand are sixteen desktop computers available to the public for their use , free of charge. For the children, there are seven I-Pads for their use during operational hours. Services offered by the library, include photo copying , laminating services , facsimiles being sent and received along with the scanning and collating of information to be sent via e mail . All of these services have applicable pricing and are available upon request from a staff member of the Dundee Public Library . We also offer Basic Computer Classes here at the library on Wednesday’s and Friday’s from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm administered by a library volunteer. Information concerning this can be provided is available upon request.

The Dundee Public Library in conjunction with Friends of The Library Dundee Florida Incorporated also conducts a Summer Reading Program for the children within our local community as well as also hosting several other fundraising events throughout the calendar year. We also have an ongoing Book Sale here at the library , with the funds raised being used for our social programs which benefit the children within our community. Another Visit To The Seniors’ Meeting organized by Catholic Charities within the Town of Dundee, Florida 

On Thursday morning I had the privilege of being a guest at the Seniors Meeting , held on a weekly basis at the Dundee Community Center ,located at 605 Lake Marie Boulevard , in Dundee , Florida . This event is ran and organized by Catholic Charities and their coordinator for the Town of Dundee is Marie Huggins-Rich.

In my capacity as a volunteer with the Dundee Public Library as well as being their Contributing Administrator and Editor for all of their social media platform content, I am often invited to attend some of the Seniors’ gathering, as well as sometimes giving a Computer Class Tutorial. These meetings provide the residents within the Town of Dundee the chance to get together , socialize and discuss topics which relate to their generation. Marie Huggins-Rich will often have special guests giving presentations on a wide variety of topics that relate to the Seniors.

Beyond their gathering together to meet , the Seniors have begun to make great friendships among their grouping and it’s become of great benefit to many of them who happen to live alone. These Senior Meetings are held weekly, on a Thursday at the Dundee Community Center , beginning at 10:00 am and ending at 2:00 pm. On Friday, 25th January , 2019 the Polk County Library Cooperative in conjunction with the Dundee Public Library will be offering up a very special story-time edition and session of their Morning Story-time . The event will be special as the session will be a bilingual session of English and Spanish renditions on the day , beginning at 10:30 am here at the Dundee Public Library .

Back For Another Computer Class Session with the Seniors of Dundee ….

This upcoming Thursday morning , I will be conducting a Computer Literacy Class at the local Community Center in the Town of Dundee , Florida , which will be of benefit to the Seniors within the community. In conjunction with the local chapter of the Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Central Florida , this will be one hour tutoring session encompassing the basic fundamentals of computer safety covering laptops , smart phones, tablets and E Book readers as well Kindles , Nooks and other electrical smart devices. As a volunteer with my local library , Dundee Public Library, this is one of the various voluntary services that I am extremely privileged to be involved in beyond my own contributions with the library itself.

Catholic Charities Seniors’ Mobile Meeting .. Revisited

Each Thursday morning between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm the Dundee Community Center comes alive as Catholic Charities (Diocese of Central Florida) Incorporated holds their Seniors’ Mobile Meeting here in the Town of Dundee , Florida . Coordinator Marie Rich continues to have a large group of Seniors attend these meetings , providing these residents with the chance to get together for the camaraderie , friendship, while also being provided with information issues which affect the Seniors in general. The Dundee Community Center as a facility is owned by the Town of Dundee and is provided to Marie Rich free of charge to stage these meetings each week. It benefits the community at large and shows the residents of our Town that the Commissioners are in full approval of this effort.

The Dundee Public Library in its capacity, has seen fit to have one of its volunteers Alan Parkins keep its patrons appraised of the ongoing efforts of Catholic Charities and Alan has provided his own experience, having a taught a class on Computer Literacy and Safety to the Seniors at a prior meeting. It was such a success that he has been asked to return and give regular classes in the future .

The Dundee Public Library continues to provide day to day patrons and out of town guests the best possible service while meeting other perfunctory needs within the community . Having been converted to an E-Library (Express Library) , all of the customer needs can still be met , with their being a well-trained staff on hand led by Library Director Vivian Godfrey , two-part-time staff members Kaliyah Monroe and LaShonta Wade .

DVD’s and audio listening books are available to be loaned , as well as the customary fiction and non-fiction books in hardback and paperback covers. There is a well-established Children’s Reading Room within the library which is dedicated to Stella Meredith, with shared eulogies to Thelma Jones and Wendy Reid, both longtime residents within the Town of Dundee, with both being widely known within the community for their dedication to the Dundee Public Library.

The Stella Meredith Children’s Reading Room is well-stocked with a wide variety of children’s books spanning kindergarten up to eighth grade. Our library also contains AR books (accelerated reading books) for elementary school children and that inventory is also well-stocked. The Dundee Public Library also offers Computer Classes which are free of charge , with these lessons taking place each Wednesday and Thursday between 2:00 and 3:00 pm with the classes being tutored by library volunteer Alan Parkins . Also offered as a service within the library are photocopying, laminating , printed copies from the library’s sixteen public computers as well as a facsimile and scanning service for customers and patrons. Prices are listed at the Circular Desk of the Dundee Public Library. Our library has sixteen public desktop computers available to the public throughout the hours of operation along with seven I-pads available for the use by the children who attend the library.

For many years the Dundee Public Library has been active within the community , working in conjunction with Friends of The Library Dundee Florida Incorporated to offer a year-round activities’ program for the children within our community (Town of Dundee). Our Summer Reading Program remains extremely popular with a wide variety of activities encapsulated within that particular program. We also have our Children’s Story-time which is presided over by Mary-Ann Podbielski , a long-time volunteer with the Dundee Public Library as well as being the Vice President of Friends of The Library Dundee Florida Incorporated.

In my capacity and role as the Contributing and Main Editor for much of the social platform content for the Dundee Public Library. On Thursday afternoon, I took it upon myself to visit the local Community Center where Catholic Charities Mobile Seniors’ Service held their weekly meetings for Seniors within our community . The coordinator for the event , Marie Rich whom I’ve come to know well in a very short time was gracious enough me along to attend their meeting.

At this morning’s (Thursday) event there was a guest presenter who was an insurance salesman for one of the state’s top health insurance providers. He had the opportunity to educate the Seniors on some of their most basic needs when it came to health insurance as well as helping them to navigate to the obstacles posed by federal government’s benefits. I have to say that I was very impressed with how easy he made for the Seniors to understand without getting into the legal jargon often associated with this issue. From a personal standpoint, I could see that my uncle , Headley Gordon was relieved by this all.

This program by Catholic Charities has been existence for almost a year here in the town of Dundee and has been operational county-wide within Polk County (Florida) for a number of years. It has become highly popular among the Seniors within the county and most certainly among the local residents here in Dundee.
