Hearing Loss Seminar Post-event Update
The Dundee Public Library and Friends of The Library Dundee Inc would like to thank those patrons who came out for the Hearing Loss Seminar presented by Elaine Goddard , President of the Hearing Loss Association of America Inc (Lakeland Chapter) . This event which took place on Thursday, 28th May, 2015 at the Dundee Public Library at 6.00 PM proved to be a resounding success, with Mrs Goddard providing those in attendance with a great deal of information and details of the resources now available for the hearing impaired.
Elaine was delighted to have shared with the attendees important information whose lives have been impacted by hearing loss and the devastating effects it is said to have on the familial unit. It has been her goal to make those afflicted with hearing impairment aware of the numerous resources now to be found and of the technological advancements being made in the field of audiology. It has been her unbridled passion alongside the astounding support and continued work done by the Hearing Loss Association of America, which has given her the greatest satisfaction while being able to assist her fellow hearing loss victims.
Dundee Town Commissioner Bert Goddard speaks to the attendees concerning the issues faced by a family member, whose spouse is hearing impaired . Commissioner Goddard is the husband of the seminar’s presenter Elaine Goddard.
It should be noted that each second Thursday of the month , HLAA conducts a meeting where invitees and attendees to the chance to learn more about Hearing Loss Wellness. These meetings are held by the Lakeland Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association (HLAA) at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Florida , details of which can be found below. These meetings are free and open to the public, where every effort is made to educate those in attendance about the issue of hearing loss.

This event was hosted and promoted jointly by the Dundee Library and Friends of The Library Dundee with the view to making the community aware of one of the most acute health issues facing the nation today. Hearing loss, is now one of the fastest growing health issues in the country , affecting one in five of the population (twenty percent 20%) and with such a rapid rise, the issue becomes more acute. It is one of the reasons why the HLAA (Hearing Loss Association of America) came into being, not only as an organization , but also to assist and empower those who suffer from this debilitating affliction.
Julie Feagle (left), Library Superintendent for the Dundee Public Library is seen here alongside Rukhsana Harper , President of Friends of The Library Dundee Inc . The two were instrumental in the staging of the event (Hearing Loss Seminar) at the town’s facility . In conjunction , the Dundee Library and Friends of The Library worked closely with the HLAA Lakeland Chapter to make sure this was a successfully staged and well-received event. There has been a positive feedback from those who were in attendance . It was an all-round concerted effort by the staff members of the Library and volunteers of FOL (Friends of The Library) in promoting and staging the Hearing Loss Seminar. It is something which all of the parties concerned hope to do again at some point in the near future.
Attendees at the Hearing Loss Seminar await the start of the event , where Elaine Goddard gave a wonderful presentation encompassing the issues of Hearing Loss and the work of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and the resources at their disposal and the work they do in local community , as well as nationwide as a national organization.
Several of the attendees at last night’s event were either individuals who were hearing impaired or had family members suffering hearing loss or gradual hearing loss. One of the issues raised during the seminar was that of congenital hearing loss , where the affliction was there at birth for the individual and how with the latest breakthroughs within the medical community , how hearing loss is being treated among juveniles, as well as young adults.
Greater emphasis is now being placed within the medical community not just on the issue of hearing loss among the young, but also the elderly and specifically with military veterans, especially those from the recent military conflicts (Afghanistan & Iraq) .
